A PricewaterhouseCoopers report conducted at the end of last year found that more than 10 million adults in the UK have never used the internet, a statistic which represents 25 per cent of the UK population. And as the digital age grows, more people without access to the internet are beginning to feel socially and economically excluded.

To bring more of the UK up to speed with the net, LastMinute.com co-founder, Martha Lane Fox, has launched an initiative to get businesses to help educate colleagues and communities. So far, 250 partners, including BT, Google and McDonald’s have joined forces, but now it’s time for small businesses to join in too.

‘If you’re a technology company there may be resources you can donate. If you’re not IT focused, it might be about ensuring all your employees can use the internet to start with, or you could offer a volunteering day to members of staff to go and train members of their family who aren’t online,” she explains.

“By building it out slowly we will crack this problem. It’s a social good but it’s also good for business. People who can’t use the internet are still consumers.”
