November 7, 2011 by Emma Semmens No Comments »

The US Small Business Administration (SBA) is offering low-interest disaster loans to Marion County small non-farm businesses. The disaster loans will help the economy to recover from economic losses whenever revenues shrink due to drought, high winds and excessive heat.

Small businesses engaged in aquaculture, non farm businesses, agricultural cooperatives and private non profit organizations can qualify for ‘Economic Injury Disaster Loans’ EIDLs. This extends up-to $2 million so as to meet financial obligations and operating expenses.

The loan eligibility is based on financial impact caused by disaster and is not based on any actual property damage. Small non-farm organizations in Dickinson and Chase counties are also eligible to apply.

Monarch Airlines to expand its Birmingham Airport operation

November 3, 2011 by Emma Semmens No Comments »

Monarch is preparing a major expansion at its Birmingham operation with thousands of additional seats, hundreds of new jobs, extra aircraft and new routes.

The low cost airline will add 150,000 new seats to its 2012 programme 52 per cent up on this year, making Birmingham Airport one of its strongest bases.

And the increase will mean the creation of 200 new jobs, with Monarch taking on additional cabin crew, and operational personnel.

The new routes will include Rome, Milan and Venice, all cities the airline hopes will appeal to both leisure travellers and businessmen.

The other two new destinations for summer next year are Dubrovnik in Croatia and Heraklion in Crete.

To cope with the extra routes it is adding two additional Airbus A320 aircraft to its fleet of four aircraft already at Birmingham.

The airlines managing director, Kevin George, said: Since launching scheduled services from Birmingham in Summer 2005, Monarchs operation has continued to grow from strength to strength and we have expanded our operations based on customer demand.

Paul Kehoe, Birmingham Airports Chief Executive Officer, said: The increase in the choice of routes served by Monarch underpins the confidence the airline has in the future growth of our region. I

Whirlpool to cut 5,000 jobs to reduce costs

October 28, 2011 by Emma Semmens No Comments »

NEW YORK (AP) — Appliance maker Whirlpool Corp. plans to cut 5,000 jobs, about 10 percent of its workforce in North America and Europe, as it faces soft demand and higher costs for materials.

The world’s biggest appliance maker also on Friday cut its 2011 earnings outlook drastically and reported third-quarter results that missed expectations, hurt by higher costs and a slowdown in emerging markets. Shares fell 12 percent in premarket trading.

The company, whose brands include Maytag and KitchenAid, has been squeezed by soft demand since the recession and rising costs for materials such as steel and copper. Due to its size, Whirlpool’s performance provides a window on the economy because it indicates whether consumers are comfortable spending on big-ticket items.

Whirlpool has raised prices to combat higher costs, but demand for items like refrigerators and washing machines remains tight. Whirlpool is also facing discount pressure from competitors.

To offset slowing North American sales, Whirlpool has turned to emerging markets. B

Sales Lessons I Learned From a Beggar

October 19, 2011 by Emma Semmens No Comments »

I recently spent a month in Florida, mostly in the Sarasota, Tampa, and St. Petersburg areas.

I noticed something while I was down there.

That is, there are far more beggars in Florida than there are in Colorado. It’s hard to go anywhere without being panhandled.

Not only that, the beggars in Florida are much more aggressive. They walk in between cars stopped at busy intersections doing their best to make eye contact. They make you uncomfortable.

Clearly, these men and women are professionals.

One man in particular stood out to me.

As he used body language to communicate with me through the windshield, he held up his index finger, raised his eyebrows, and mouthed:

“Just one penny? Just one penny?”

I gave him a dollar.

After all, who gives a poor man just a penny?

There are a few sales lessons hidden in this brief story.

First, persistence often pays off. This man didn’t give up easily. He did
